FileMover must be installed, running and configured correctly on both computers before it will connect. A USB connection failure problem can be caused when the older USB network cable drivers detect the cable; which prevents the new drivers from correctly detecting the cable. For example, Laplink Gold 11.0 may have been previously installed and configured to use the older TCP/IP network cable drivers (LLGOLDUSBDRIVERS.EXE). Alternatively, those same drivers may have been downloaded and installed in error. Uninstalling the LapLink USB network cable driver itself from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel will have no effect. Click here for instructions on accessing the Windows Device Manager.
Figure 1. (Incorrectly detected Gold USB 1.1 cable)
Note a: The LapLink USB cable may instead be detected as an ‘Unknown Device’ in
the ‘Other Devices’ category. The driver will need to be updated, and all the same steps below
under ‘Solution’ will apply.
Note b: If the Gold cable is not plugged into the USB port, the cable will not be
displayed in the device manager. If you do not see either entry, try attaching the cable to a
different USB port, or swapping ends of the cable.
Figure 2. (Correctly detected Gold USB 1.1 cable)
Note: If Laplink Gold 11.5 or higher has been installed previously, the driver may
appear slightly differently: "
LapLink USB 1.0 cable (VID_06D0&PID0622) using NcBulk.SYS". This
is not a problem and will not affect USB connections, even if the two computers don’t match.
Figure 3. (Correctly detected IOGear Smartlink USB 2.0 cable)
Note a: The IOGear cable will not be detected at all unless both ends are attached
to a USB port.
Note b: If Laplink Gold 11.5 or higher has been installed previously, the driver
may appear differently: "
Iogear device (VID_3495&PID_00E0) using NcBulk.SYS". This is not a
problem and will not affect USB connections, even if the two computers don’t match.
Note c: If the IOGear-supplied driver cdrom has been used, then the driver may
appear differently: “
Iogear USB 2.0 Network Cable in File Transfer Mode”. This is a problem
and will affect USB connections in FileMover. The driver will need to be updated, and all the same
steps below under ‘Solution’ will apply.
The following are steps common to all operating systems: 1. Attach the USB cable to both computers 2. Open the Windows Device Manager. See Technical Document # 359: How to Open Windows Device Manager. 3. Determine if the USB drivers appear correctly on both computers. Hint: Click on the plus sign (+) to expand the appropriate category. 4. If they appear incorrectly, follow the appropriate link for each computer, and then proceed to step 6 below.
Windows 98 Windows ME Windows 2000 Windows XP & Windows Server 20035. Ensure that the Device Manager entry for the USB cable on each computer now matches Figure 2 or 3 (above). 6. Start FileMover on both computers. 7. Attempt to initiate a USB connection from the Connection Wizard. 8. If the connection is not made automatically, check the hosting and user (security) settings in FileMover on the remote computer. For more information, see the FileMover online documentation. 9. Contact LapLink Technical Support if you continue to experience problems.
