PCmover provides IT personnel with the ability to select only the elements they wish to include and filter out corrupt files, file types, folders, and programs not in compliance with corporate IT policies. In addition, PCmover does not transfer Browser Helper Objects (BHO’s) and toolbars by default, preventing Trojans and other malicious code that hi-jack a PC’s browser from making it to the new PC.
Laplink PCmover fully supports migrations to a virtual PC environment. This allows organizations to migrate traditionally-managed desktops, laptops and workstations to virtual PC environments, enabling more efficient and effective desktop support for the long-term, without sacrificing end-user productivity and IT help-desk support resources.
Imaging utilities are prevalent in most corporate PC replacement projects, but they don’t provide the PC to PC transfer capability necessary to bring the user data from old to new machines. The time it takes to image a PC and manually transfer the user data, non-standard applications, and profile settings can seriously delay the replacement project. PCmover is often used as the final step of a PC replacement project to automate the transfer for all unique user data, applications, and user settings are transferred, creating a seamless upgrade experience for the end user.
PCmover will allow you to transfer applications, files, and settings from an old PC to a new PC automatically, regardless of the hardware configuration or Operating System. PCmover will not transfer the Operating System, meaning the destination PC will need to come pre-configured with Windows XP or Vista. Here are a few key differences for PCmover and imaging utilities like Ghost or Acronis.
Key Differences:
These key differences allow you to transfer the unique profile of a PC, to a new PC without having to worry about device driver incompatibility issues or hardware setup problems. Many times, end users or employees will also call technical support to finalize the remaining customizations after a migration, which impacts employee productivity and also tech support resources. PCmover can be considered a replacement to imaging tools, or even in combination as a "final step" in the overall migration process to ensure full data delivery.
PCmover Enterprise has more flexibility and features compared with the Microsoft User State Migration Tool or USMT. With the USMT migration utility, there is a limit to the types of files and data you can transfer between PCs. A key feature of PCmover is the ability to transfers the whole PC "personality" including applications (and associated DLL/registry keys). It allows you to select which applications you want moved to the new PC among the other items I listed previously, along with user profiles, user settings, applications, application settings, files and directories.
Key Differences:
PCmover also shows unregistered applications that can potentially cause issues if moved to the new PC. This feature is very helpful in ensuring a clean migration by allowing you to choose what to move over - PCmover is the only migration utility that can do this for you.
PCmover Enterprise is a natural fit with many Lifecycle Management utilities, such as Altiris or Microsoft SCCM. Lifecycle Management utilities utilize an imaging process for desktop deployments, allowing only a stamped, generic image be placed onto the new PC. Because only a generic image is placed onto the new PC, there still is the responsibility of transferring the user data, user apps, settings, profile information, etc. PCmover is an excellent compliment to Lifecycle Management tools as it will automate the transfer of these items automatically, ensuring a fast PC deployment while reducing end user downtime.

PCmover licensing leverages a "per migration" server-based activation model, with each migration triggered by a unique, configurable serial number. For Enterprise customers, Laplink creates a custom build of the PCmover software for each organization with an embedded serial number, allowing the migration workflow to execute seamlessly.
Each time an "old" PC is upgraded, PCmover checks the serial number issued and reports the license usage over the internet to Laplink’s activation server, allowing the migration to continue. PCmover also supports pre-activations for PC migrations that need to take place offline.
